Cotton bedding

Nothing will make the house more comfortable than a perfectly clean set of bed linen, harmoniously matched to the bedroom interior.

Coarse calico and satin are ideal for bedding - these are cotton fabrics woven from thicker fibers than ordinary cotton, which are distinguished by their density and strength.
Despite the widest range of bed linen presented in stores, it is sometimes difficult to make a choice: either the color is not the same, then the quality is not like, then the size is not suitable. But there is a way out - to sew it yourself.

Having decided on the size of the duvet cover, sheets and pillowcases, go to the store. Before you commit purchase of the fabric you like, add extra centimeters to the required footage for shrinkage. Cotton, like any natural fabric, sits when wet. A large piece of fabric will be difficult to decorate in the usual way, so bed linen is washed after it is sewn. Extra centimeters added during cutting will save in the future a surprise called "not my size".
White cotton bedding erase at high speeds, at a temperature of 90 ° C, color and with a picture - at 60 ° C. Spin mode, you can select the highest.
To preserve your work, appearance and color of bedding after washing, use modern powders of proven brands that rinse well, do not corrode fabric fibers and retain color, for example Ariel. White cotton underwear perfectly launders Ariel (White Rose, Mountain Spring, but not Color & style - it is suitable only for colored fabrics).
Dried flattened cotton sheets. To make it easier to iron, you can slightly dry the laundry, leave it slightly damp. Dry cotton sheets are easy to iron by setting the iron to “cotton” and using the steam function.
Expert Opinion
The moderator of our site, an engineer-technologist of sewing production, a sewing teacher, Svetlana Khatskevich, gives our readers some more valuable tips on sewing cotton bedding and caring for it:
For tailoring bedding is better to take special fabrics for bedding larger widths. Now they are available in widths of 160 and 220 cm.
It can be chintz, calico, satin and linen. Chintz and calico are the most budget options, but they wear out faster and lose their presentation.
Satin is a smoother, denser and brighter fabric. It protects a good appearance for a long time, looks better, lasts longer, but costs more. And since there are a lot of fabrics for a set of linen - 7-8 meters, the price also matters.
Linen is often used on sheets, as they, as a rule, fail most often with frequent washing. And flax possesses increased wear resistance. Only better to take natural flax. From my own experience I know that flax with synthetics quickly becomes covered with unpleasant spools and loses its appearance.
Now there is bamboo fabric. In quality and properties, it is not inferior to high-quality satin. Sets of bamboo are expensive, but if you sew clothes with your own hands, it will be much cheaper.
Attailoring I add to the sizes of the pillowcases 3 cm pillowcases for shrinkage, and the sheets and duvet cover - 5-6 cm long and wide. Plus allowances for freedom of at least 5 cm.
I make allowances of 1.5 cm and process the seams with a linen or French seam (without overlock). This seam is stronger and more accurate, which is important for bedding.
And here after sewingBefore using it, I wash clothes at high temperature. Linen sits down and becomes softer. Double rinse required! Not all cars wash clothes well because of its large volume the first time. Because of this, it can turn gray over time.
An interesting fact is that in many countries, such as Sweden, it is not customary to iron sheets.
